Flights are usually the biggest line item
Round-trip fares from the U.S. to Accra (ACC) vary widely by season, departure city and how early you book. As a broad planning range, many travelers see fares roughly between $900 and $1,800 in economy, with December and summer at the top end. Consolidated agency fares often beat what you find online — always ask for a quote before buying direct.
Accommodation ranges widely
Accra offers everything from guesthouses to international-brand hotels. Mid-range comfort typically runs well below U.S. city prices, while premium hotels in Accra approach Western rates. Outside the capital, good hotels and lodges cost less, though options are fewer.
Food and daily spending
Local restaurants and chop bars are very affordable; upscale restaurants in Accra cost closer to U.S. casual dining. Budget separately for bottled water, tips, market shopping (Kente cloth, crafts) and mobile data.
Getting around
Ride-hailing apps work well in Accra and Kumasi. For intercity travel and sightseeing, a private driver is the comfortable standard — and usually the biggest transport expense for visitors. This is where a guided package earns its keep: transport is pre-arranged at a fixed cost.
Don't forget the paperwork costs
Add the Ghana visa fee, yellow fever vaccination, travel insurance and any passport renewal to your budget. Individually modest, together they can add a few hundred dollars per traveler.
