Your passport comes first
U.S. travelers need a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date you enter Ghana, with at least one blank page for the visa. If your passport expires soon, renew before you start the visa process — the visa is tied to your passport.
You need a visa in advance
Ghana does not currently offer visa-on-arrival for ordinary U.S. tourist passports, so apply before travel through the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C. or the consulate serving your state. Single-entry and multiple-entry options exist; frequent visitors often choose multiple-entry. Requirements and fees change, so confirm details on the embassy's official site when you apply.
What the application typically asks for
Expect to provide the completed application form, passport photos, your flight itinerary, proof of accommodation or an invitation letter, and the visa fee. Business travelers usually add a letter from their company. Keep copies of everything you submit.
Yellow fever is mandatory
Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry — the yellow International Certificate of Vaccination (the 'yellow card'). Get vaccinated at a registered clinic at least 10 days before departure and carry the original certificate with your passport.
Timing and realistic expectations
Standard processing is typically measured in business days to a few weeks, with expedited options at extra cost. Apply at least a month before departure — earlier in peak season (November–January) when application volumes rise.
