Book your flight early — and arrive at the right time
F-1 students can enter the U.S. up to 30 days before their program start date. Aim to arrive 1–2 weeks before orientation. August fares from Accra climb fast, so book as soon as your visa is approved — student fares often include extra baggage, which you'll need.
Arrange your first nights before you fly

Carry your documents in your hand luggage
Passport with visa, I-20, SEVIS I-901 fee receipt, admission letter and financial evidence travel with you — not in checked bags. You'll show them at U.S. port of entry. Keep photocopies separately and digital copies in your email.
Money and banking
Bring a card that works internationally and some U.S. cash for the first days. Inform your bank of your travel, and research student bank accounts you can open after arrival. Know how your family will send support — transfer services vary widely in cost.
Packing smart
Check your airline's baggage allowance carefully (student fares often allow two or three bags). Prioritize documents, medication with prescriptions, season-appropriate clothing for your campus climate, and adapters for U.S. outlets (Type A/B, 120V). Buy bulky items after arrival.
